Being imperfect can make you happy

Being imperfect

Often we can set ourselves up for a fall, over rate things and have a totally unrealistic outlook on life.

We want things to be so perfect that we get disappointed and discouraged if they don’t meet our high expectations.

Friendships and marriages are often the ‘perfect’ example of this.

If we don’t have a realistic view on what it takes to nourish these relationships we can easily destroy them.

It’s not about perfection, it is actually about imperfection!

Watch this week’s video blog and find out how being imperfect can make you happy.

Has there been a time in your life when you have accepted either your imperfections or the imperfections of someone else and as a result your happiness has increased?

I would love hear your thoughts on this so please join the Happy Art community and comment below.

Be happy, colour the world.

A couple of Saturday ago one of my best friends Katie got married again. I was the MC at her wedding and my other best friend Nikki was her bridesmaid. The three of us have been best friends for over 20 years and in Nikki’s words we have celebrated the highest of highs and supported each other through the lowest of lows.

I believe that special friendships whether they are with your girlfriends, your mates, your siblings, your parents or your partners are one of the pillars of happiness. Today I want to share with you a part of Nikki’s wedding speech because it was one of the most REAL and inspirational speeches I have heard for a while. It’s the magic stuff that happens when some one opens up their heart and tells it like it really is without the rainbows and lollipops.

So here we go, a small extract from a heart-warming speech;

…as little girls, we are enchanted by fairy tales and stories of happily ever after and perfect love. The trouble is that when you add the element of human beings, all perfection goes out the door. Apart from innocent children, a perfect human is a fantasy, and consequently we disappoint each other, we fight, we disagree and we make mistakes. But we also empathise, forgive, grow and compromise. So in my opinion, the true fairytale and in fact the secret to a great marriage is not when a perfect couple comes together, but rather when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences. It is when two imperfect people refuse to give up on each other.

My wish for you Katie, is that you get your happily ever after with your new husband, and that now that you have become a family of 5, your life with be one of imperfection and absolute joy!

How wonderful was that, I know there were many people wiping their eyes after hearing that.

Treasure your friendships, embrace your imperfections and those of others knowing that they are there to help you practice love, compassion and forgiveness.

Be happy, colour the world and I will see you in a couple of weeks.

  1. I love this post too because they are my words, and it means so much to me that you felt them worthy enough to include in one of your blogs. Reading the back today, I got quite teary. The words still hold true and you’re correct in saying they came from my heart. I think everyone can relate to trying to achieve absolute perfection in all aspects of our lives and once we realise just how unrealistic this is, hopefully that can help in the attainment of happiness. Thank you my bestie X

    1. So glad you I did your words justice Nik, they were like gold to me. I think it is so important to have a realistic outlook on happiness and striving for perfection in everything that we do is not realistic or helpful in any way.
